What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?
Your car's computer keeps watch over the engine, fuel, ignition, and emissions systems. When it sees something out of range, it stores a trouble code and turns on the check engine light. The cause can be minor or serious, and the light by itself can't tell you which.
Solid vs. Flashing
- Solid light: not an emergency, but don't ignore it. It often points to something minor, like a loose gas cap, but it can also be an early warning of a bigger problem.
- Flashing light: stop driving and call us. A flashing light usually means a serious engine misfire, which can overheat and damage the catalytic converter.
Common Causes
- A loose, cracked, or worn gas cap
- A failing oxygen sensor
- Worn spark plugs or ignition coils (misfires)
- A dirty or failing mass airflow sensor
- Small leaks in the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system
- Catalytic converter problems
Why a Code Is Only the Starting Point
A basic code reader tells you which system reported a problem, not always which part failed. Replacing parts based on the code alone can cost you money without fixing anything. We use state-of-the-art computer diagnostics to find the real problem fast and fix it right the first time. We explain what we found, give you an upfront quote, and you approve every repair before we start.
Other Warning Lights
We also diagnose and repair ABS, airbag, and all other dashboard warning lights. If a light comes on and you're not sure what it means, call or text us.
